AbstractIt is important to explore PhD/EdD supervisors' experience to better understand this expanding field of doctoral education in higher education. In this paper, we examine our collective experience as doctoral supervisors in three different institutional cultures and national contexts from Canada, Australia, and China. We adopt a methodology of collaborative autoethnography informed by symbolic interactionism to interrogate our doctoral supervision experiences. Using an iterative reflexive approach to inquiry, data was collected as we each engaged in reflective writing on our individual experiences and regular dialogues based on reflective writing. We then synthesized these experiences and led to the development of four themes: Joy in Supervision; Challenges with Doctoral Supervision; Intercultural Complexities; and Institutional Complexities. Our findings revealed that while some experiences with supervision are universally recognized, such as joy along with challenges, there are individual experiences as a doctoral supervisor that can and do vary across different cultural and institutional contexts. The study contributes to conversations about navigating supervisory roles in complex and changing institutional and global contexts. (HRK / Abstract übernommen).
