Abstract	In family economics, policy impact analysis concerns the evaluation of causal effects with respect to outcomes of interest regarding children, adolescents or parents. With respect to child protection, it is either about preventive measures to avoid child endangerment or about interventions with the goal to reduce harm to a child in case child endangerment has already occurred. The scope of this article is twofold. First, it presents a conceptual framework for measuring the costs and benefits of preventive and interventional child protection measures for society as a whole from a life course perspective. A valid measurement of benefits as an integral part of such a framework requires methods that allow for causal inference, i. e. a control group approach with random allocation of individuals to the treatment- and control group. Second, since ex-ante randomization is rarely possible in child protection practice and research for various reasons, this article presents two quasi-experimental methods from economics that exploit exogenous variation in space and time and discusses their possible application to child protection as well as the associated data requirements.
