| Abstract | Questions represent a central tool in language support (Beckerle, 2020; Hormann & Skowronek, 2019), although we know little about their adaptive use. This article presents the newly developed observation system for analyzing question sequences in staff professional-child interactions in childcare centers (B-FRAKA; Damaske, 2024) to investigate adaptivity from a language-supporting perspective. We compared video data from 32 professionals, each interacting with a monolingual and a multilingual child. In both dyads, around half of the question sequences are assessed as adaptive. There are significant differences in the design of the sequences (especially the children´s answers and the professionals´ reactions); adaptations to the children´s different linguistic abilities are primarily reactive, rather than already present in the type and frequency of the professionals´ questions.
