| Abstract | An experimental pre-post study with random assignment of educators (N = 132) examined the effects of coaching, training, and a combination of both formats on pedagogical content knowledge and instructional support quality. Direct and indirect effects of professional development (PD) formats on instructional support quality via effects on pedagogical content knowledge were also examined. Multiple regression analyses showed that coaching was superior to training in increasing pedagogical content knowledge, but not to the combined format. Coaching was also superior to the wait-list control group in increasing instructional support quality, but not to the combined format or training. Structural equation models indicated an indirect effect of coaching and a direct effect of training on instructional support quality. Our results suggest that different PD formats focusing on interaction strategies lead to comparable effects on instructional support quality, but that two distinct mechanisms of PD can be identified to improve instructional support quality. The low level of variance explained by the models is discussed. (ZPID). |
