| Abstract | Structured, standardized and evidence-based assessments in child protection are becoming increasingly important for practice in German-speaking countries. Researchers are faced with the challenge of analyzing the effects of an implementation of such a tool in a methodologically adequate approach. To this end, 414 cases were examined at six child welfare services (CWS) in Switzerland. Assessments of reported incidents were compared before and after the introduction of a structured instrument and contrasted with cases in CWS that had not introduced a structured assessment tool. While the introduction of a tool had no significant impact on the duration of the assessment or the invasiveness of the recommended measure, forms of neglect were now documented significantly more frequently. Along with the results, various implementation challenges are discussed. These include the planning of the study (e. g. separation of instrument development and review), the control of confounding changes in the investigated facilities or problems in analysis and interpretation (e. g. lack of variance due to legal framing).
