Abstract	Despite their importance in everyday school life, counselling and communication with parents are often neglected in teacher education. This study examines the professionalisation of teachers? counselling skills through training in the ?Gmünder Modell zur Gesprächsführung mit Eltern (GMG)?. Over two school years, the individual goals of N = 265 teachers were recorded using the Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS), and goal attainment was assessed at the end of the training. The goals resulted in three categories: communication skills, coping strategies and counselling knowledge. The average goal attainment was between 70 and 80 %. Participants emphasised the positive influence of the methodological alternation between theoretical input and practical exercises. The teachers reported positive effects of the training, particularly through the methodological alternation of theoretical input and practical exercises. The results show that the training contributes to improving teachers? counselling skills. However, additional measures such as supervision, case discussions and the long-term implementation of training formats such as the GMG training are needed to strengthen practical application in the long term and to further develop counselling skills.
