| Abstract | Developmental anxiety is common in childhood and varies in type and extent. Its etiology is influenced not only by individual factors (including gender, emotion regulation) but also by environmental factors (including stressors such as the COVID-19 pandemic). In this study, 386 primary school children (class 2 ? 4, 176 boys, 210 girls, average age: 9;4 years) were asked about their anxiety and coping strategies during the pandemic (2021) using the BAV 3-11 (Mackowiak & Lengning, 2010) and compared with norm data (2010) from 533 children (class 2 ?4, 259 boys, 274 girls, average age: 9;6 years). The results show a generally higher level of anxiety during the pandemic. However, not all children reacted with increased anxiety; 55 children were identified who reported high anxiety about the pandemic, belonged to the risk group of children with high scores (PR=75) in the BAV 3-11, and named coping strategies that indicated dysfunctional emotion regulation. The findings highlight the relevance of early diagnosis and prevention in order to avoid developmental risks in children with severe anxiety. (ZPID). |
