| Abstract | This study investigated the beneficial influence of the participation of a caregiver on symbolic play in toddlers. We compared play behavior in a free-play situation between joint play with their mother and playing alone in 122 children aged 18 months. In joint play, the children exhibited symbolic play more often and played at a higher level than in solitary play. The extent of the differences between the play conditions correlated with the child?s temperament, with more extroverted children showing a greater decrease and better-regulated children a lesser decrease in play level in solitary play. We discuss the results regarding the possible benefits of maternal behavior and their implications for tutoring symbolic play in early childhood education and care. (ZPID). |
