| Abstract | The family is the primary educational environment for children, with the home learning environment having a significant influence on children?s development. The quality of parent-child interactions plays a crucial role in children?s development as it provides children with everyday learning opportunities. The Family Stress Model (Masarik & Conger, 2017) assumes that stressors can lead to parental stress, which has a negative impact on parent-child interactions. It is also assumes that protective factors, such as empathy, mitigate this negative relation. The present study (N = 126 parent-child dyads) therefore investigated the effect of parental stress on the parent-child interaction quality in dialogic reading situations, taking into account parental empathy as possible protective factor. No significant relation was found between the parents? perception of stress and the interaction quality. Further analyses showed an exponentially negative relation between parental stress and interaction quality among parents with lower empathy scores. In contrast, among parents with higher empathy scores, there was no significant relation between parental stress and interaction quality. The study results indicate that parental stress does not necessarily lead to a reduction in the quality of interaction. Rather, the extent of stress and the presence of protective factors are of significance. (ZPID). |
