| Abstract | Background: The criteria for diagnosing a developmental learning disorder (DLD) differ between ICD and DSM concerning the IQ discrepancy and the definition of an achievement deficiency. Methods: Analyzed were data from an online study (N = 3,308), in which 3rd and 4th grade children fulfilled reading, spelling, and maths tests, and parents completed questionnaires on children?s mental health. Results: It revealed that the prevalence of a DLD reduces from 16.2% (based on the ICD) to 15.4% (based on the DSM), using an IQ-achievement discrepancy of at least 1.2 SD. Children who fulfilled the ICD criteria reached better cognitive performances, and mental health, compared to those identified based on the DSM. Discussion: The consequences of a shift from ICD to DSM for identifying children with a DLD are discussed. (ZPID). |
