Abstract	If there is a risk of significant harm to children in their family, it is the state?s obligation to protect the children. But, in these situations intervening in family life may also have negative effects on children. In order to be able to estimate short-, medium-, and long-term effects of different measures in the children?s best interest, empirical findings with longitudinal data are essential. However, these are missing, especially in German-speaking countries. The article summarizes international research lines on the effects of state intervention in families due to endangerment of children?s well-being and explains the methodological approach using selected studies as examples. Building on this and taking into account the specific structures and professional traditions, challenges and possible solutions of the implementation of longitudinal studies in Germany are discussed.
