| Abstract | Children's media consumption is the subject of controversial scientific and public discussion, although (digital) media have become part of the environment of all children in the first years of life. The present study examines how often 12-month-old infants from socially disadvantaged families have access to TV and smartphones, and how often mothers use media to distract their infant. In addition, the study examines the extent to which participation in family support programs affects children's media use. Part of the BRISE project surveyed 300 mothers. The results show that almost 50% of infants have contact with television and smartphones, and that 40% of mothers use media for distraction. In low-income families, it is more common for infants to be in contact with and be distracted by media. Mothers with a first-generation immigrant background are more likely to use (digital) media for distraction and more often allow contact with TV and smartphones. Mothers with higher parental self-efficacy expectations are less likely to use media to distract their children. Families participating in family support programs are less likely to use media to distract their infants. The results point to the potential of family support programs and the need to broadly address media consumption in these programs. (ZPID). |
