| Abstract | Studied the home learning environment (HLE) as a predictor for children's behavioral development, including later symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). 924 preschool students were initially assessed about 18 months prior to beginning elementary school and at another four time points through the end of second grade. Assessments included the German short version of the Connors Parent Rating Scale (CPRS-R), the teacher-completed Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), and questions regarding socioeconomic status (SES), television-viewing behavior, and the home learning environment. Results indicated that ADHD symptoms were negatively and significantly correlated to HLE at all five measurement points, while SES and television exposure were correlated similarly at most time points. Only early HLE, but not SES or television exposure, was found to be a significant predictor for later development of ADHD symptoms at school. A structural equation model showed that HLE acted as a mediator between SES and later ADHD symptoms. In conclusion, results demonstrate the importance of the home learning environment for children's behavioral development. (ZPID). |
