Abstract	Studied the home numeracy environment (HNE) and its influence on the development of mathematical abilities in children. 609 preschool students were assessed about 18 months prior to starting school and at three additional time points through the end of first grade. Assessments included a German version of the Columbia Mental Maturity Scale (CMM), a rapid-naming task, a number span task, phonological-awareness tasks, a vocabulary test (AWST-R), the Performance Indicators in Primary School (PIPS) test, a math test (DEMAT 1+), and information regarding attendance, socioeconomic status, the home numeracy environment, and mathematical abilities in the family. Results showed that HNE was not only an important predictor of mathematical abilities at the end of kindergarten, but it also influenced the further development of mathematical competencies above and beyond its initial impact. Families with a history of dyscalculia provided a more unfavorable HNE than families without such problems. In conclusion, findings show the home learning environment plays a significant role in early development of mathematical competencies. (ZPID).
