| Abstract | Investigated the relationship between dispositional teacher enthusiasm and students' interest. 75 secondary school teachers (mean age 46 years) completed surveys assessing enjoyment and positive experiences related to teaching and emotional expressivity. 863 students (mean age 15 years) provided a total of 1,523 ratings of their perceived teacher enthusiasm and their level of interest. Multilevel structural equation modeling was applied to the data. Results showed that teachers' dispositional enthusiasm positively predicted students' interest (enjoyment and intrinsic value). This relation was fully mediated by students' perceived teacher enthusiasm, which is maintained to validate the concept of enthusiasm as positive affect and positive emotional expressivity. Moreover, a measurement model in which dispositional teacher enthusiasm was regarded as a second-order latent construct defined by positive affect and positive emotional expressivity showed god fit. Implications of the results and suggestions for future research are discussed. (ZPID). |
