AbstractExamined the stability of the multimedia effect in learning to determine whether the benefits of learning with combined representations of text and pictures are merely short-term or remain present following a delay of one or two weeks. The authors also tested whether learning with text alone functions as a desirable difficulty. Participants in two studies learned about a pulley system with a written text with or without an illustration and were tested on their knowledge immediately or after delays of one or two weeks later. Results showed that learning times were shorter with multimedia than with a written text alone. Additionally, a multimedia effect for comprehension and retention was observed regardless of the length of delay in testing. In conclusion, multimedia learning with text and picture consistently improved comprehension and retention compared to learning with text alone in tests immediately following learning and in tests administered one or two weeks following learning. Contrary to expectations, learning with text alone could not be confirmed as a desirable difficulty. Multimedia learning appears to be beneficial for short-term processing advantages as well for longer-term knowledge retention. (ZPID).
