| Abstract | Investigated the role of cultural and ethnic identity strength on adolescents' cognitive performance in situations of explicit/implicit stereotype threat in 2 studies. A total of 171 adolescents with foreign ethnic background living in Austria were compared to 120 Austrian adolescents (all aged 12-15 years). Standardized measures assessed immigration background, residence culture identity strength, ethnic identity strength, bicultural identity integration, cognitive performance, and affective state. The results of Experiment 1 suggested that under conditions of explicit stereotype threat and irrespective of ethnic identity strength, high identification of adolescent immigrants with Austrian culture correlated with superior cognitive performance. No association emerged between residence culture identity strength and cognitive performance under condition of implicit stereotype threat. A manipulation of residence culture identity strength in Experiment 2 revealed that emphasizing similarities with the residence culture positively influenced immigrant adolescents' performance under threat. Implications for enhancing educational achievement among immigrant students are discussed. (ZPID). |
