| Abstract | Examined the effects of text-graphic integration on text comprehension. In two experiments, learners read an expository text about the geopolitical conflict in Darfur accompanied by two types of graphics, showing a weak or stronger metaphorical relation to the situational model of the text. To measure mental-model construction, learners wrote a reflective essay describing their understanding of the material immediately following exposure and after one week. The California Critical Thinking Skills Test (CCTST) was also completed. Participants included 168 college students (mean age 22 years) in Study 1 and 98 college students (mean age 22 years) in Study 2. Results showed that decorative graphics (when presented in a natural as opposed to a laboratory setting) that are carefully selected for correspondence (relevance) can significantly influence the amount of text learning, particularly over time.
