Abstract	Studied the longitudinal trajectory of situational interest (SI) among German adolescents, against the theoretical background of the 4-phase model of interest development. According to this model, environmental factors are important in determining an individual's SI in any given learning context. To test this supposition, 327 academic track 9th- and 10th-grade students (mean age 14 years) completed repeated self-report measures of SI while they worked on problem-based learning activities. The resulting SI data were then analyzed using latent-state trait theory, which allowed for a differentiation of situation-specific vs person-consistent components. The results indicated that situation-specific (i.e., environmental) effects had a strong influence on participants' self-reported SI. Furthermore, substantial variance in SI was independent of preexisting individual interest. The results warrant a definition of the human psychological state of interest as "situational interest." Future research will explore long-term changes in SI and the development of individual interest. (ZPID).
