Abstract	Research on sexual misconduct in academia has increased during the last decade, yet most studies ignore social gender and academic power relations. Sexual misconduct does not only harm its primary victims but also leaves its impact on those who bear witness to the damage and on the entire academic community. Basing our research on an online survey of anonymized testimonies provided by members of the academic community, our research aims to draw a more accurate picture of sexual violence in the Israeli academia. We discover that silencing sexual misconduct is an important obstacle for changing the culture of harm. We have identified four silencing mechanisms: victims' shame and fear, institutional confidentiality, victim blaming, and intimidation and sabotage. These enable the academic community to ignore the injustice. We argue that witnessing is the most effective community response, enabling its members to struggle collectively against this harmful silencing and to humanize the academia.
