| Abstract | Global student mobility has been a critical element of international higher education. Policymakers and higher education institutions have promoted international student mobility in many ways, including by providing financial aid. However, knowledge of who participates in government funding programs for degree-seeking abroad, how participants' background characteristics and capital are related to their opportunities to access such funding, and whether obtaining international advanced degrees contributes to intergenerational social mobility is limited. This study utilizes Bourdieu's concept of cultural capital to investigate the characteristics and types of capital possessed by the participants of Taiwan's government scholarships and education loan programs for advanced degrees abroad. Drawing on a survey of 130 fellows who participated in government programs to seek degrees abroad between 2005 and 2015, this study found that the recipients of government grants for advanced degree abroad are more likely to come from a high socioeconomic status background with substantial cultural capital. The reproduction of social class was also found among these recipients. Upward intergenerational social mobility is found mostly among the fellows in the education loan program. The results of this study extend Bourdieu's argument on the critical role of cultural capital in sustaining social class within the context of globalization in higher education.
