Abstract	Through a bibliometric database of academics from four top Chinese universities, this paper aims to investigate the impact of different types of mobility and destinations for study abroad on global knowledge production and whether these effects are heterogeneous across cohorts or disciplines. Knowledge production is based on two indicators calculated according to the publication data in Scopus: the average number of articles per year, which measures quantity, and the average cumulative citations per article, which measures quality. According to the development of Chinese higher education and the changes in international mobility policies, the data was divided into three cohorts: those obtained doctoral degrees before 1998, those between 1998 and 2007, and those between 2008 and 2017, respectively, referred to as cohort 1, cohort 2, and cohort 3. The results show that although there are some variations across disciplines, overall, the positive effects of international academic mobility on knowledge production tend to grow from cohort 1 to cohort 2 and then decline or disappear in cohort 3. The analysis offers further insight into knowledge production in the changing global science. With the ontology of openness, there is more freedom and agency for Chinese academics and institutions to explore more cross-border interactions and cooperation in science research on a global scale.
