AbstractThe transformation of Islamic universities in Indonesia from IAIN to UIN has not only opened up space for modern science, but also significantly altered the availability of space for the Islamic knowledge at their heart. Could it be that this transformation does not reinforce their Islamic scholarly excellence, but instead potentially causes a profound erosion of the distinctive characteristics that once defined them? Applying qualitative method and case study, data was collected through interviews and relevant documents review, which was subsequently examined using content analysis approach. Focusing on State Islamic University Walisongo, this research found that spatial narrowing is reflected in the reduced prominence of programs, classes, students, lecturers, and research/public service activities oriented toward Islamic knowledge. This spatial narrowing stems from pressure to ensure greater autonomy and realize a wider mandate. The former is shaped by two factors, i.e., market orientation and global competition, while the latter is formed by three factors, i.e., criticism of Islamic knowledge, pride in other sciences, and strategies dealing with political Islam. Although there is an emphasis on integrating Islamic knowledge and modern sciences, concerns persist regarding the potential dilution of Islamic knowledge, the challenges of interdisciplinary studies, and the urgency of a balanced approach in achieving the institution's noble mission. The changes occurring at UIN Walisongo (and potentially at other UINs, though further confirmation is needed) may marginalize Islamic knowledge and impact the distinctive characteristics and traditional mission of Indonesia's Islamic higher education that have long defined them. Therefore, by being equally critical of Islamic knowledge and other sciences, and balancing Islamic knowledge with other sciences, the narrowing of spaces for Islamic knowledge can be avoided.
