Abstract	Conducted 3 studies investigating the effects of achievement in one particular academic domain on self-perceived competence in another domain. A total of 171 university students (aged 17-49 years) participated in 1 of the 3 studies. The results of Study1 indicated that high achievement in one specific domain (mathematics) results in lower self-perceived competence in another domain (verbal competence). Study 2 showed that achievement feedback containing explicit dimensional comparison information (i. e., internal frame of reference) about personal performance on 2 concrete tasks led to inverse effects on self-perceived competence. Dimensional comparison effects were also observed in Study 3, even when subjects were presented with additional social comparison information (i. e., external frame of reference). The educational implications of the findings are discussed. (ZPID).
