| Abstract | After 1969 educational historians were no longer much concerned with the independent progessive school movement of the 1930s which had been broadly reviewed in 1968 and 1969 by R. Skidelsky and W. A. C. Steward. However, the movement was not entirely forgotten. "This paper seeks to strengthen debate and discussion through a closer examination of their record in the sixties. ... it will be confined largely to a consideration of the reaction of the founding group, Abbotsholme, Bedales and King Alfred to the three main challenges of the period, the emerging youth culture greatly influenced by the Beatles, the new educational thinking emanating from such bodies as the Nuffield Foundation, the Schools Council and the Plowden Committee and the high profile attack on progressivism led by Cox and Dyson in their ' Black Papers'. It aims to examine whether the independent progressives simply turned their back on these developments and sought some kind of solace in their isolated rural communities, ... or whether they responded more positively to the principal social and educational forces of the age".
