AbstractPositive childhood experiences, including nature-based experiences, may counteract the effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the impact of one nature-based and experiential learning program on youth exposed to ACEs. Analysis of qualitative data from program participants, their parents, and program staff and board members revealed that time in nature as part of the program improved children's critical thinking skills, contributing to academic success. Experiences in nature were reported to improve children's confidence and trust in themselves and others, leading to emotional intelligence and maturity. This research points to the benefits of a nature-based program for physical and mental health, academic achievement, and relationships for at-risk children from low-income urban areas.
