| Abstract | This collection of 12 author-contributed papers examines the notion of "academic community" within and among institutions of higher education. Papers are grouped into four sections which examine the idea of academic community, community through academic inquiry, community through curriculum, and community through organization, respectively. Papers have the following titles and authors: (1) "Recovering an Academic Community: Above But Not Beyond" (Ronald Barnett); (2) "Divide and Rule" (Peter Scott); (3) "Maps of Knowledge: Do They Form an Atlas?" (John Wyatt); (4) "Interdisciplinarity and Community" (Tony Becher); (5) "Towards a Common/Universal Language" (Kenneth Wilson); (6) "Towards a New Enlightenment: What the Task of Creating Civilisation Has to Learn from the Success of Modern Science" (Nicholas Maxwell); (7) "Levels of Discord" (Roy Niblett); (8) "The Power of Language" (Marjorie Reeves); (9) "Transferring Learning in Higher Education: Problems and Possibilities" (Anne Griffin); (10) "Creating a Learning Community on Campus" (Patricia Roberts); (11) "Creating Community Among Teachers: A Case Study" (Christian Schumacher); and (12) "Recovering 'Academic Community': What Do We Mean?"
