Abstract | This guide is intended for use in conducting a reading lab for a broad group of workers ranging from nonreaders to persons reading at a fifth-grade level. Presented first is a course overview that includes the following: information on the course's targeted population, student selection process, and demographics; strategies for adult remediation; diagnostic and instructional materials used; methods used; results of the lab's past use; and comments made by students after completing the course. The remainder of the guide consists of 2 word games and 30 exercises on the following topics: pronunciation rules (pronunciation and spelling, vowel sounds, spelling rules, vowel combination, and dictation); homonyms; complete sentences; basic spelling rules (doubling consonants and words ending in "y"); verbs (regular verbs, subject and verb agreement, plural forms of nouns, irregular verbs, verb tenses, and expressions of time); paragraphs and paragraph writing; and pronouns.
