Abstract	This book examines the rationale, benefits, and limitations of computer-assisted career decision making (CDM). Discussed in Chapter 1 are the following: the components of CDM (options, persons, environments, processes, and outcomes); the historical development and context of CDM; and considerations in reaching decisions about work, occupations and jobs, and career education and training. Chapter 2 specifies the shared and distinctive career guidance service needs of various client groups (students, the general adult population, colleges, corporations, and counseling program/service developers). Outlined in chapter 3 are a model guidance system and major approaches to guidance. Chapter 4, which focuses on the functions of guidance systems, covers the domains of self-understanding, the dimensions of values, the structure of interests, prediction in the System of Interactive Guidance and Information (SIGI), skills in SIGI PLUS, occupational information, strategies for deciding, decisions in actions, and style and design. Examined in chapter 5 are considerations/processes in evaluating guidance systems, including aspects of validity, efficacy, comparisons of males and females in CDM, independent evaluation, and evaluations of SIGI and SIGI PLUS. Chapter 6 assesses the future prospects of CDM, including possible new delivery systems and international development. Contains 263 references. (MN)
