| Abstract | Arguing that videodisc technology has major implications for the storage and retrieval of information and that it may meet learners' needs in ways never before possible, this paper highlights key points regarding the history and development of videodisc technology, explores its implications for education, and addresses current and future uses of the technology. A review of the development of the videodisc covers: what a videodisc system is; history of the videodisc; technological developments; types of systems (capacitance and optical); features such as recording and storage capabilities; costs; and advantages and disadvantages of videodiscs. A discussion of uses of videodisc technology concentrates primarily on educational applications, and a few comments on the future of videodisc technologies conclude the paper. A list of references is included. (THC) |
