Abstract | Guidelines and principles concerning the role of non-Catholic parents, teachers, and students in Catholic schools are discussed in two articles. In recent years in the United States the number of non-Catholic teachers and, especially, of non-Catholic students in Catholic schools has grown. Non-Catholic enrollment has increased from 2.7 percent in 1970 to 10.6 percent in 1983. In the first article, "The Schools as an Evangelizing Community: Guidelines regarding Teachers, Pupils and Parents," the Reverend James Hawker examines the nature, mission, and responsibility of the Catholic church and discusses things to consider in the hiring of a non-Catholic teacher in a Catholic school, criteria for the admission of non-Catholic pupils, and topics which should be discussed with non-Catholic parents. In the second article, "Religious and Cultural Variety: Gift to Catholic Schools," Sister Thea Bowman stresses that the presence of non-Catholics in Catholic schools can help children learn about and appreciate other religions and, thus, better prepare them for life in a pluralistic, multi-ethnic, multi-cultural world.
