Abstract | In a second edition, this book reports on the Aquinas College, a Catholic, coeducational, liberal arts college in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The original text on the steps taken by the college to remain viable during the difficult circumstances of the seventies is supplemented by an epilogue in which the results of the Aquinas College reassessment of its mission, role, and scope and subsequent initiatives are discussed. The college initially focused on its heritage, continuing strengths, and aspirations and later sought to achieve its aspirations in view of conditions prevailing in the external environment. It is concluded that the self-study resulted in new ideas for institutional development, and the overall process became a vehicle for implementation of a number of programs and development of an accreditation report. Every faculty member was assigned to one of five study groups, and each group had three student members. Study-group members visited other campuses and took part in campus-wide retreats to compare recommendations. It is claimed that the institution's new continuing education mission was implemented with a minimal amount of disruption because of effective internal communications. (SW) |
