AbstractPresented is the handbook for volunteers at the Community Developmental School (Goldsboro, North Carolina), a program serving moderately, severely, and profoundly retarded children (with a chronological age ranging from birth to 21 years and developmental age ranging from 1 month to 5 1/2 years). Section I focuses on the program's organization and description with sections on the following: staff, consulting school personnel, advisory board, parent-volunteer-staff organization, history, overview, learning stations, error-free learning, and behavior modification. Provided in Section II are an overview of mental retardation, a general description of various handicaps (including mongolism, cerebral palsy, and autism) that may be observed in the children, and a list of suggested readings. Section III consists of outlines of volunteer job descriptions and projects, a summary of the training program, ideas and suggestions for dealing with the children, and questions and answers about volunteer activities and procedures. A final section includes appendixes with school layouts, a sample volunteer registration form, and a sample contract. (SBH)
