AbstractThis programed, self-instructional course has the following terminal objectives: (1) to present some notions of the science of linguistics and the major branches of linguistics, (2) to teach the segmental and suprasegmental phonemes of French, (3) to identify the major articulatory problems of French for the native speaker of English, (4) to assist the teacher and future teacher of French to teach pronunciation and to diagnose pronunciation problems in their students, (5) to provide articulatory hints to the teacher, (6) to suggest procedures for overcoming linguistic interference, and (7) to enable the user to read professional literature on French linguistics with a measure of understanding. The program is divided into 27 subsections on: language and linguistics, phonetics and phonology, voicing, point and manner of articulation, special consonant problems, phonemics, vowels, vowel classification, nasal vowels, semivowels, special pronunciation problems, rhythm, and intonation. The text contains more than 675 programed frames. (Author/RL)
