Abstract | The present study investigates the expectations of 88 students towards their visit of an out-of-school lab (OSL) for social sciences and humanities and how these expectations relate to both their actual experiences of the visit and their situational interest in the project contents. OSLs are non-formal learning settings which are usually visited by whole classes and aim at authentically communicating scientific ways of thinking and working. In contrast to this goal, our findings suggest that the least students expect from an OSL visit is to get authentic insights into scientific research. They rather expect to have a nice time with their classmates and without pressure to perform. Our findings also point to the need to change these expectations, as especially the expectation to get authentic insights into scientific research positively correlated with students' reported experience of having acquired knowledge during their visit and their situational interest in the project contents.
