Abstract | A history of the concept of music aptitude in the United States and Europe serves as an introduction. Emphasis is given to the distinction between developmental music aptitudes, evidenced in children ages 5 through 8, and stabilized music aptitudes, evidenced in students nine years old and older. The main portion of the report is a three-year longitudinal study of the developmental music aptitudes of 127 kindergarten children who were first tested in 1978 on the Primary Measures of Music Audiation. The results of the study indicate how developmental music aptitudes change over time. Additional results and discussion relate to the way in which young children initially conceptualize sound as music and then the way they adapt these ideas to conform to those of adults'. Special reference is made to how young children interpret the words same and different as they apply to music. (DIPF/Orig.) |
