Abstract | This study assesses and contrasts instruction in sustainable development in United States and South Korean middle (secondary) and high (tertiary) schools by evaluating teachers’ knowledge of, and attitudes toward, this important topic. A questionnaire administered to teachers in both countries provides data for the study. After inquiring about their definition of sustainable development, the survey asked teachers if they taught about sustainable development, and if so, to indicate from a list which topics they covered in their instruction. The questionnaire also collected information about which topics teachers emphasized and which topics teachers thought should be included in their curricula. Variations between the two countries are evaluated and contrasted. The study compares respondents’ appraisal of the importance of teaching about sustainable development versus the amount of instruction and which topics they actually include in their teaching.
