| Abstract | "Despite women's higher educational attainment, a gender pay gap emerges immediately upon entry into the labour market, particularly among highly skilled workers. This study examines factors beyond the conventional determinants of wages to gain a deeper understanding of these persistent disparities. Using unique data on graduate cohorts in Germany, we discuss the role of self-perceived skills as an additional explanatory factor. Employing Kitagawa-Oaxaca-Blinder decompositions and instrumental variables (IV) estimations, we find that early wage differentials are primarily driven by field of study, with a smaller contribution from perceived skills. Female graduates are less likely to view themselves as having a relative advantage in analytical skills over social-organisational skills, contributing to wage penalties that may compound over time." The study refers to the period 2001-2010 (Author's abstract, IAB-Doku, © 2026 Elsevier B.V.
