| Abstract | The chapter opens the discussion on democratic music education through an interview-based reflection that positions the perspective both within and outside the field of music education. It critically addresses the dominance of global education measurement practices and argues for more humane, world-centred approaches to education. The arts are presented as offering important opportunities for children and young people to express themselves, develop creativity, and articulate identity. At the same time, the contribution emphasises that education must go beyond self-expression by bringing individuals into dialogue with the world, questioning whether what emerges supports living well with others. Drawing on a keynote presented at an international music education conference in Lyon in 2023, the interview further elaborates on this perspective and highlights the shift from child-centred to world-centred education, outlining its implications for music teaching and learning. This article is part of the anthology European Perspectives on Music Education, Volume 13, addresses topics such as inclusive practices, the role of technology, and teacher education. |
