At the core of Deci and Ryan's self-determination theory of motivation are the two theses that social inclusion, experience of competence and autonomy are basic psychological needs whose fulfilment enables self-determined learning, and that integrated forms of extrinsic motivation can also be self-determined, provided they are conducive to these needs. In this essay, I would like to apply the theory to two approaches from practice, each of which has the claim of democratic education and to that extent practices self-determined learning to a high degree, but takes different paths in doing so: The self-organized seminar "Bildung von Unten" and the democratic teacher training of the educational collective " kairós". |
