| Abstract | Intrafamilial expectations and obligations play an important role in shaping parent?child relationships and developing mutual behavioral expectations across the lifespan. Obligations in family relationships refer to felt obligation, that is, the expectation of appropriate behavior shaped by a child?s personal relationships with their parents. Using a predictive model, this study investigated which aspects of adult children?s relationships with their parents influence their felt obligation. The model included perceived reciprocity, parental support, social norms, relationship quality, and autonomy. A paper-and-pencil survey conducted in Germany included 600 adult children (53.8 % female, 25 ? 49 years). Structural equation models, estimated separately for mothers and fathers, identified social norms, perceived reciprocity, relationship quality, and proved to be significant predictors, whereas autonomy did not contribute substantially to explained variance. The findings suggest that family counseling and support services should prioritize strengthening reciprocal exchanges, normative expectations, and relationship quality over promoting individual autonomy.
