| Abstract | Theoretical background: The care provided to adolescents and young adults with mental illnesses can be optimized through the implementation of internet- and mobile-based interventions (IMIs). The vulnerable and psychotherapeutically underserved group of traumatized youth could benefit especially from IMI care, so we aim to gain preliminary insights into the potential of IMIs for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Objective: This preliminary investigation into the potential for IMIs to provide care surveyed a nonclinical sample. It examined the hypothetical help-seeking behavior and attitudes toward IMIs in general among healthy individuals aged 16 ? 25 as well as the factors influencing these aspects. Furthermore, the study identified the perceived advantages of IMIs and the preferred channels for information about IMIs as well as the perceived barriers of IMIs for PTSD treatment. Method: A nonclinical sample (n = 212; mean (sub)age(/sub) = 21; 75 % female, 85 % university students) was studied via an online questionnaire. Self-developed items determined the advantages and preferred information channels of general IMIs and perceived barriers to PTSD-specific IMIs. Multiple regression analyses identified the predictors of help-seeking behavior and attitudes toward IMIs. Results: The study identified a positive attitude toward seeking mental health care and a low level of concern about potential stigmatization from loved ones in the event of mental illness as significant predictors of hypothetical help-seeking behavior (p ( .05). There were no significant predictors of attitudes toward general IMIs. The study also identified several perceived advantages (e. g., short waiting times) and preferred information channels (e. g., recommendations by a psychotherapist) as well as several barriers to PTSD-specific IMIs, such as having to write a trauma narrative. Discussion and conclusion: The homogeneous sample of the study limits the generalizability of the results, but it does provide insights into the need for IMI treatment in adolescence. Future research should examine more heterogeneous and clinical samples regarding the use of IMIs in PTSD treatment. (ZPID). |
