| Abstract | The distress caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and other global crises poses a significant challenge to maintaining the mental health of adolescents. Not only do adolescents have to cope with the distress of contact restrictions, school closures, and other impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, they must also deal with the distress posed by the climate crisis and the Russia-Ukraine war. Furthermore, the distress caused by these crises affects young people in an already vulnerable phase of life, characterized by numerous developmental tasks. This study investigates the extent to which adolescents are affected by the global crises mentioned above. Furthermore, to identify possible risk factors, the study examines the proportion of adolescents who still report clinically elevated symptoms of depression and anxiety as well as low health-related quality of life, even after the de facto end of the COVID-19 pandemic. We surveyed 3 998 pupils from 58 schools in the federal state of Saarland, Germany. Even after its de facto end, the COVID-19 pandemic remained the greatest stressor among the crises surveyed, followed by the Russia-Ukraine war and the climate crisis. The symptom burden of the adolescents was high: 39 % reported clinically elevated symptoms of depression, and 54 % showed clinically elevated general anxiety symptoms. Health-related quality of life was low in 29.9 % of the 10- to 14-year-olds and in 42.3 % of the 15- to 18-year-olds. Female and diverse gender was a risk factor for clinically elevated symptoms of anxiety and depression as well as for low health-related quality of life. We also found group differences in age regarding depression symptoms, with most adolescents exceeding the cut-off in the 16- to 18-year-old group. We did not find migration background to be a risk factor. The results show that the negative consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of adolescents are ongoing and suggest additive effects of global crises. We therefore urgently need measures to promote resilience in adolescents to prevent existing symptoms from becoming pathological or chronic. Furthermore, such measures should be adapted to the respective risk factors. (ZPID). |
