Abstract	Theoretical Background: The persistent challenges in youth mental healthcare ?high prevalence rates, long wait times, and frequent therapy dropout ? underscore the need for innovative and tailored interventions. Participatory research with young people is both a right (UN Convention on the Rights of the Child) and a means to improve health services by collaboratively developing age-appropriate, needs-based solutions that address the limitations of adult-designed approaches. However, uncertainties remain regarding the practical implementations of participatory research with young people. Method: Using a participatory and multimethod approach involving professionals as well as children, adolescents, and young adults, we developed a practical guide. The practical guide results from a quantitative preregistered online study (N = 253; 66 % female, M(sub)age(/sub) = 16.4), interviews, and a focus group with interdisciplinary professionals (N = 21) and qualitative in-depth cocreation with youth (N = 5). Results: The practical guide summarizes the insights on best practices and recommendations in four ?lessons learned?: 1. Mindset and self-reflection precede methods and tools. 2. Successful participation relies on trust, relationship, and communication. 3. Methods must align with goals, resources, and context. 4. Effectively sharing decision-making power requires intent and competence. Discussion and conclusion: The recommendations presented support clinical psychologists in implementing participatory approaches with children, adolescents, and young adults in their research projects. The practical guide facilitates participatory research projects while also ensuring target group appropriateness through cocreative development. Despite alleviating planning and implementation, some challenges remain, including ethical concerns, a lack of recognition within the academic landscape for participatory research, limited diversity among participating children, adolescents, and young adults, and insufficient transparency and evaluation of participatory processes. While the guide provides hands-on suggestions on how to implement participation, the long-term success of participatory research with young people remains uncertain because of often severely limited resources.
