Abstract	Investigated two competing models of the relationship between test anxiety and test performance: the deficit hypothesis and the interference hypothesis. 411 psychology students completed a cognitive ability test battery as well as a short form of the Test Anxiety Inventory-German version (TAI-G) and a modified version of the German State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-SKD). Results were in accordance with the deficit hypothesis which states that less competent test-takers have higher state test anxiety. Structural equation modeling also demonstrated that that state/trait test anxiety was most closely linked to general cognitive ability. State test anxiety components specific to the posttest measurement were also found to be linked to cognitive ability, whereas state test anxiety components specific to the pretest measurement were not. In conclusion, results support a deficit model regarding the test anxiety-test performance relationship. (ZPID).
