| Abstract | Investigated the role of both mothers and fathers in the transmission of harsh parenting beliefs across generations, in this case, to their children 23 years later, with a particular focus on the moderating role of interaction quality. Gender and socioeconomic status were included as control variables. Data were collected in a longitudinal study of 128 families across 23 years. Harsh parenting was assessed with items from the Konstanzer Fragebogen für Schul- und Erziehungseinstellungen (KSE, a German questionnaire for school and parenting attitudes); socioeconomic status with the Standard International Socio-Economic Index of Occupational Status (ISEI). Results show high positive associations between the harsh parenting beliefs of parents and their adult children, but only the mother-child transmissions were moderated by interaction quality. It is concluded that mothers pass on low levels as well as high levels of harsh parenting beliefs to their children if their interaction quality is poor. (ZPID). |
