| Abstract | Investigated the association between parenting challenges and parents' personality development. 556 mothers of newborns (aged 19-45 years) participated in Study 1, and 548 mothers (aged 27-57 years) and 460 fathers (aged 29-65 years) of adolescents participated in Study 2. In Study 1, personality was assessed at two time points using the German version of the Big Five Inventory (BFI) and parenting challenges were assessed using the Mother and Child Questionnaire. In Study 2, parents completed the International Personality Item Pool (IPIP40), a measure adapted from the Parenting Sense of Competence Scale, and the Parent-Adolescent Conflict Scale. Results showed that parental stress after having a newborn was associated with decreases in agreeableness, conscientiousness, and emotional stability. Furthermore, parent-adolescent conflict was likewise associated with decreases in conscientiousness and emotional stability. In contrast, high parenting self-efficacy was associated with increased agreeableness, conscientiousness, and emotional stability. The association between changes in personality and parenting challenges were found to be more consistent in mothers of newborns as compared to parents of adolescents. It is concluded that mastering parenting challenges is linked to changes in personality in young and middle adulthood. (ZPID). |
