Abstract	Investigated cultural differences in mothers' practices of body stimulation in the first three months. Furthermore, continuity and change in such practices were also investigated. To this end, interactions between 20 Italian mothers (mean age 33 years) and their infants as well as 20 West African mothers (mean age 28 years) who had been in Italy for a minimum of 8 months and their infants were observed at 4, 8, and 12 weeks. Furthermore, parenting ethnotheories were examined by conducting Picture Cards interviews at 12 weeks. Results showed that Italian mothers placed more emphasis on tactile stimulation and displayed longer durations of tactile behaviors than mothers from West Africa. Furthermore, West African mothers were observed to place more emphasis on motor stimulation and also showed longer durations of rhythmic motor and rhythmic tactile behaviors as compared to Italian mothers. Immigrant mothers emphasized ethnotheories and behaviors that reflected their cultures of origin, which is argued to reflect continuity in parenting strategies. However, no differences were observed in durations of motor behaviors, and mothers from both cultures emphasized positive emotionality which is suggested to be indicative of the integration of some elements of the new cultural context into existing parenting strategies. The results are concluded to highlight the complexity of the acculturation process. (ZPID).
