AbstractExamined the effect of creche attendance (i.e., preschool for children under age 3) prior to kindergarten (for children aged 4-6 years) on cognitive ability, behavior, and motor development. Two complementary studies were designed to test the hypothesis that creche attendance predicts cognitive ability and overall development in children. Results of Study 1 (31 kindergarten children who attend creche vs. 31 sociodemographically matched kindergarten children who had not attended creche aged 53-71 months) supported the hypothesis, showing a strong positive relationship between creche attendance and cognitive ability, motor development, and socioemotional development in kindergarten children who had attended creche compared with those who had not. In addition, a negative association was observed between creche attendance and behavior problems in kindergarten children. Study 2 compared 52 4th graders with and 66 without prior creche attendance (all participants aged 106-132 months). Findings showed a weaker positive relationship between creche attendance and cognitive ability than among kindergarteners, and a stronger correlation between creche attendance and negative social as well as learning behaviors. In conclusion, a significant correlation between creche attendance and overall intelligence in kindergarten and primary school could be confirmed, although the positive correlation weakened with age. Reasons for negative behavioral effects of prior creche attendance were discussed. (ZPID).
