| Abstract | Explored the stability and change in maternal life satisfaction and psychological distress following the birth of a child with a congenital anomaly. Data from nearly 100,000 mothers who participated in the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study, and who provided data at five time points from Pregnancy Week 17 to 36 months postpartum were analyzed. Mothers were divided into those having infants with Down's Syndrome (DS), Cleft Lip/Palate (CLP), or no disability (ND). Assessments included the Satisfaction with Life Scale, (SWLS) and a short version of the Symptom Checklist (SCL-5). Results from structural equation modeling showed that satisfaction and distress levels were highly diverse in the sample, but fairly stable over time. However, the birth of a child with DS was linked with a rapid decrease in maternal life satisfaction and a corresponding increase in psychological distress between pregnancy and 6 months postpartum; this remained stable up to the last assessment 36 months postpartum. CLP had a temporary impact on maternal distress at 6 months. However, the overall trajectories did not differ between CLP and ND mothers. In conclusion, the birth of a child with DS influences maternal distress and life satisfaction throughout the toddler period, whereas a curable condition such as CLP has only a minor temporary effect on maternal psychological distress.
